During September of 2007 I was 30 years old and in the final stages of preparing to not only relocate to New York City, but also travel for the first time ever outside of Australia. My apartment was empty, my possessions either sold off or boxed up and in family members' sheds, my plans completely unclear. All I could see was what I was losing. Up to this point I had lived a life artistically in service of embracing the unknown, but this was a far scarier unknown than any I'd embraced previously.
- Alex Carpenter, New York
An aeroplane is heavy anyway, but consider how much weight is attached to notions of home, to memories and relationships, and to emotions such as Alex Carpenter turned up with at Adelaide airport, and you’ll understand why I think he must have smiled when they weighed his bags.
I hoped this music’s slow ascent, its superstition and pre-ordained process, its absence of turbulence save for a soft vibrato at a cello’s cruising altitude, and its austere descent, parallel and antipodal to take off, into JFK International, and his new home, New York, would get that fragile baggage there safely for him to unpack just as he remembered it.

Might be one of my favorite albums. The vocals and percussions make for something which sounds at the same time very new and very ancient and I love it. Joanna Foliveli

Originally composed for the stage, this dystopian jazz suite galvanizes AI-related anxieties into powerful, unsettling explosions. Bandcamp New & Notable May 13, 2020
