To see Joan afflicted by strokes and to be immobilised and dependant - I watch that with real deep interest and fascination (...) because I know that’s around the corner, very close by. So I’m being taught to die (...)

And what is this stare we are both engaged in? (...) There’s sadness in it, because perhaps this is the last time I see Joan and know her (...) I suddenly feel incredibly young and strong, and I realise I should get on and enjoy life (...) I’ve got so much to do but so little time now. (M.L.)
