I found myself working in the meat works because I was not a great student (...)

There’s the killing of animals, just wholesale, mass killing. I’ve often thought: if working in this way brutalises some people, it certainly sensitises others.

You don’t do it and sort of just walk away (...) a lot of slaughter men, in later life, developed a kind of disorder. It comes back to them. (M.L.)
